Locally Listed Edwardian Home Transformation in Harpenden
A sensitive transformation of a locally listed Edwardian family home, set within the heart of a Harpenden Conservation Area, carefully balancing contemporary family living with the character and significance of the original property.
The design focuses on making better use of the existing home, with a considered extension and internal reconfigurationto improve circulation, functionality and connections between spaces. The approach remains mindful of the original layout and architectural character of the house, retaining and celebrating important existing features while adapting the property for modern family life.
Part of the transformation involves the removal and replacement of inappropriate later interventions that had disrupted the balance and character of the original building. The new additions have been carefully considered in their scale, proportion and materiality, creating a contemporary architectural response that remains sympathetic to its Edwardian setting.
The proposals also address the relationship between the house and the street. Selective changes to the existing frontage and vegetation improve visibility, access and safer movement to and from the property, while retaining the established planting and leafy, green character that contributes to the Conservation Area.
We successfully obtained planning permission for the transformation, demonstrating how thoughtful contemporary intervention can enhance a locally significant historic home while respecting the qualities that make it special.
