Sensitive & Sustainable 1930's Home Transformation in the Green Belt & Chipperfield Conservation Are
A sensitive and sustainable transformation of an existing much loved family home, a 1930s bungalow, located within both the Green Belt and a Conservation Area.
Taking a reuse-led, fabric-first approach, the design retains and reimagines the existing home, preserving its original 1930s character and architectural style while carefully adapting it for contemporary family life.
The existing dormer roof has been reworked to create a calmer and more coherent form, with carefully considered alterations that remain sympathetic to the proportions, materiality and character of the original bungalow and its Conservation Area setting.
Internally, the home has been reconfigured to improve daylight, circulation and connections between spaces, alongside the introduction of step-free access. Its environmental performance is also significantly improved through enhanced insulation, high-performance glazing and a considered fabric-first approach.
We successfully obtained planning permission for the transformation of the property, navigating the sensitivities of both its Green Belt and Conservation Area setting. The approved design demonstrates how thoughtful retrofit, reuse and contemporary intervention can preserve the character of an existing home while giving it a more sustainable and considered future.
